Grip force generated by gravity and shifting gate

On this type of detachable grip the grip force is generated exclusively by the gravitational force of the carrier. A small coil spring is only used for retracting the movable grip jaw.

The hanger arm can move vertically in the grip housing. The weight of the carrier pushes the movable grip jaw against the rope via a gate (inclined guide). The degree of grip force is thus dependent on the load status of the carrier (empty/full). The grip opening and closing operations are initiated by suitably inclined running rails which lift or lower the carrier.

The grip is prevented from opening on the line, e.g. when passing over sheave assemblies, by an interlocking latch. This is raised by an additional opening rail on entry into the station, thus unlocking the grip.

Advantages:
- Function readily understandable: no levers, articulated joints, working springs etc.
- Grip force not the same in the case of empty or fully loaded carrier.
- Gentle on the rope as the grip force is only applied in accordance with the load.

Disadvantages:
- Difficulties involved in testing grip force and sliding resistance
- Gravity grips are not permitted in all countries.
